Cameiro is focused and emphasizes early recognition of problems and immediate intervention. This key difference is achieved by constant awareness of the heifers and close monitoring of their surroundings. Pens are walked every day and any animal that appears listless, inactive, and does not exhibit alertness is examined.
Cameiro is proactive in preventing problems. Our vaccination program incorporates a stress prevention component that allows vaccines to provide maximum protection. Not all vaccines are equal and Cameiro has rigid standards vaccines must meet. Boosters are given on a specified schedule and detailed vaccination records are kept on each heifer.
Cameiro evaluates new calves at receiving. They are weighed, vaccinated, have extra teats removed, receive magnets and are critiqued for any additional health problems requiring special care if needed. The continued vaccination program includes multiple vaccines to maintain the health of the heifers while they are at Cameiro and after they return to their home dairy.
Cameiro goes the extra step to ensure a healthy feedyard. Cameiro's pen sanitation and our climate have prevented any cases of heel warts or other hoof problems. Heifers receive hoof trimming as needed.
